This Learning Material on “Power Electronics” is written primarily for the students of various Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges of India and abroad. This learning material is aimed to help the learners in situations where the teacher is unable to integrate successfully book-based material with his own industrial experience and to present it in an exciting way. Much of the material in this LM has been included as part of relevant taught courses or of research projects over the past twenty years. The students are presumed to have a background in mathematics, electronic signal devices and electric circuits that would be common in the early years of first degree courses in electrical and electronics engineering. Some questions are based directly on from day to day happenings, which lead the students for critical thinking.They are encouraged to know the details of the market products used in their daily life. The modules include various power semiconductor devices, their construction, terminal identification, switching characteristics both static as well dynamic, and packages available at present. Different commutation circuits with appropriate waveforms and circuit components are covered in the LM. Various generic converter topologies that are used in most applications have been described with typical practical circuits. The topic of intense research such as resonant converters is also included. The need of protection circuit is emphasized. Both electrical and thermal protections of the devices are explained.
